Band History
The Calgary International Airport Pipe Band was formed in 1999 out of people from all areas of the airport community who were interested in learning and playing bagpipes and drums together as a group. The group set a target date of Canada Day 2001 for the inaugural performance, but progressed so rapidly that the band played publicly for the first time in 1999 for a Remembrance Day ceremony in the airport terminal.
Since that initial performance, the band has gained expertise and experience. It performs annually for Canada Day celebrations and Remembrance Day ceremonies, various special events around the airport, parades, charity events and other private functions.
Band Purpose and Goals
The Tartan
The band wears the Canadian Maple Leaf tartan; the red, yellow and brown hues depicting the autumn colours of the maple leaf. It was named the official tartan of Canada in 2011 and was a perfect choice for a pipe band that represents a Canadian international airport community.
The Band Logo
The CIAPB logo was created by former band member Chris Low. It features a bagpipe and crossed drum sticks superimposed on a set of pilot's wings and a maple leaf which represents the Canadian aviation community. The shield embodies the various uniformed airport personnel (police, security, border security) and the red, blue and teal colours represent the various airlines at the airport. Band members proudly wear the logo on uniform shoulder crests and hat badges.
